Vitamin C Brightening Serum
Vitamin C is the most evidence-backed topical ingredient for skin brightening and hyperpigmentation — and the most frequently formulated incorrectly. The form, the concentration, and the pH all determine whether a Vitamin C serum works or simply sits on the skin.
What This Is
The Vitamin C Brightening Serum uses L-ascorbic acid — the only form of Vitamin C with direct, unambiguous evidence for topical skin benefits — at 15% concentration in a pH 3.0–3.5 base. This is the specification used in the foundational research by Dr Sheldon Pinnell at Duke University that established L-ascorbic acid's topical efficacy, and the specification that most commercial Vitamin C serums fail to meet while still claiming the category's benefits.
Why L-Ascorbic Acid
The Vitamin C skincare market contains dozens of Vitamin C derivatives — ascorbyl glucoside, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate — each marketed as a stable, effective alternative to L-ascorbic acid. Some of these derivatives are more stable and less irritating than L-ascorbic acid. None of them have the same volume of human clinical evidence for collagen synthesis stimulation, melanin inhibition, and free radical scavenging as L-ascorbic acid at pH 3.0–3.5. The derivatives must be converted to L-ascorbic acid in the skin before they become active — a conversion that is partial and inefficient in most skin types. L-ascorbic acid is active as applied.
The 15% Concentration
Research demonstrates that L-ascorbic acid produces measurable benefits at concentrations between 10% and 20%, with the dose-response curve plateauing above 20% — concentrations above 20% do not produce greater benefit and are significantly more likely to cause irritation. At 15%, this serum sits in the middle of the effective range, providing meaningful activity while maintaining tolerability for the majority of skin types. For first-time users or those with sensitive skin, beginning with every-other-day application for two weeks before daily use is recommended.
The pH Requirement
L-ascorbic acid is only stable and skin-penetrating at pH 3.5 or below. Above pH 3.5, the molecule's charge changes in a way that reduces its ability to penetrate the stratum corneum — the skin barrier that must be crossed for any topical active to reach the target cells in the epidermis and dermis. Many commercial Vitamin C serums are formulated at pH 5.0–6.0 for tolerability, which significantly reduces the penetration of the active ingredient. This serum is formulated at pH 3.0–3.5 — the range that maximises penetration — with the tolerability achieved through a short list of non-irritating excipients rather than by compromising the pH.
The Supporting Ingredients
Vitamin E (tocopherol) at 1% and ferulic acid at 0.5% — the combination established by Pinnell's research as the most effective stabilising system for L-ascorbic acid. Vitamin E and ferulic acid prevent the oxidation of L-ascorbic acid that turns it from a colourless, active molecule to the orange-brown oxidised form that is inactive and mildly pro-inflammatory. The combination also enhances the UV protective effect of L-ascorbic acid — the combined photoprotection of L-ascorbic acid, Vitamin E, and ferulic acid is documented as approximately double that of L-ascorbic acid alone. Hyaluronic acid at 1% provides a hydrating vehicle that makes the serum comfortable to apply and reduces the potential for the low-pH formulation to cause surface dryness.

How to Use
Apply three to four drops to clean, dry skin in the morning, after cleansing and before moisturiser. Allow to absorb for sixty seconds before applying the next product. Follow with SPF 50 Daily Sunscreen — Vitamin C's UV protective benefit is most valuable as part of a complete sun protection protocol, not as an alternative to it. Do not apply simultaneously with Niacinamide — while the traditional concern about Vitamin C and Niacinamide forming niacin is overstated at normal use concentrations, applying them together can reduce the efficacy of both. Apply Vitamin C in the morning and Niacinamide in the evening.
Stability and Storage
L-ascorbic acid oxidises with exposure to air, light, and heat. The serum is packaged in an airless pump bottle that minimises air exposure at each use. Store in a cool, dark location — a bathroom cabinet rather than a shelf. A slight yellowing of the serum over time is the beginning of oxidation — discard and replace if the serum turns orange or brown, as oxidised L-ascorbic acid is no longer active.
