The Lip Sleeping Mask is a thick, balm-textured overnight treatment for the lips — applied as the final step of the evening routine and left on during sleep, where the extended contact time allows the occlusive and active ingredients to produce significantly more benefit than a daytime lip product with short contact time. The format was popularised by Korean beauty brand Laneige and has since become the most widely adopted overnight lip treatment format in skincare — the concept is correct, and the formulation here is built around ingredients with genuine functional evidence rather than primarily aesthetic ones.

The Occlusive System

The primary function of an overnight lip mask is occlusion — creating a physical barrier over the lip surface that prevents transepidermal water loss and traps the moisture already in the lip tissue. The occlusive system here uses a combination of shea butter (an occlusive emollient that also provides fatty acids for the lipid barrier of the lip skin), beeswax (a traditional lip occlusive with a high melting point that maintains the product's position on the lip surface throughout the night rather than migrating off), and squalane (a lightweight occlusive that improves the feel and the spreading quality of the heavier occlusives without reducing their effectiveness). The combined occlusion rating of this system is high — lip moisture loss is virtually prevented during the contact period.

The Active Ingredients

Niacinamide at 2% — applied to lips overnight, niacinamide's barrier-supporting ceramide stimulation is relevant for the lip skin's very thin barrier, and its antioxidant properties protect against the UV and environmental oxidative damage that is one of the contributors to lip darkening over time. Vitamin E (tocopherol) at 1% — an antioxidant that also conditions the lip skin and prevents the lipid oxidation that can cause the beeswax and shea butter in the formula to develop rancidity during the shelf life of the product. Peptide complex at 0.05% — palmitoyl tripeptide-1, providing a collagen-stimulating signal that is relevant for the fine vertical lip lines (perioral lines) that develop with age and that are one of the visible signs of lip skin ageing. Hyaluronic acid at 0.5% — a humectant layer beneath the occlusive system that actively attracts moisture to the lip tissue rather than simply preventing its loss.

The Flavour Question

The Lip Sleeping Mask is formulated without flavour or fragrance — a deliberate decision. Flavoured lip products are pleasant to apply and smell, but the flavouring ingredients are common allergens in lip products where they are frequently licked and therefore ingested. For a product with overnight contact time on mucosal tissue (the lips are mucous membrane, not skin), the allergen risk of flavouring is higher than in a daytime lip product with shorter contact. The unflavoured formula has a neutral, slightly waxy character from the beeswax and shea butter that is not unpleasant and that does not interfere with the taste of food or drink.

How to Use

Apply a generous layer to clean, dry lips as the final step of the evening skincare routine. No need to rub in — the occlusive function requires a surface layer rather than absorption. Apply enough to be clearly visible on the lip surface (approximately twice the quantity of a daytime lip balm application). Leave on overnight. In the morning, any remaining product can be wiped away with a damp cloth or tissue, or incorporated into the morning lip care routine by applying the Tinted SPF Lip Balm over the residual mask.
