The Hyaluronic Acid Hydration Serum uses three molecular weights of hyaluronic acid simultaneously — high molecular weight (1,500–1,800 kDa), medium molecular weight (300–500 kDa), and low molecular weight (50–100 kDa) — to provide hydration at three levels of the skin. The multi-molecular-weight approach is the technical advancement that distinguishes sophisticated HA serums from single-weight products, and the one that produces the most comprehensive and long-lasting hydration result.
The Three Molecular Weights
High molecular weight HA (1,500–1,800 kDa) — Too large to penetrate the skin barrier, this molecule sits on the surface of the stratum corneum and forms a hydrating film that attracts atmospheric moisture to the skin surface. The effect is immediate and visible: skin looks plumper and more luminous within minutes of application. This is the molecule responsible for the "glass skin" effect associated with HA serums, and the one that provides the most dramatic immediate visual result. It does not contribute to long-term or deep hydration but creates a surface quality that makes the skin look and feel hydrated. Medium molecular weight HA (300–500 kDa) — Partially penetrating, this molecule reaches the upper epidermis — the stratum granulosum and stratum spinosum — where it supplements the skin's own hyaluronic acid production, which declines with age. This is the molecule that produces hydration in the epidermis itself rather than simply on its surface, and the one responsible for the improved skin texture and reduced fine line appearance that sustained HA use produces over weeks of application. Low molecular weight HA (50–100 kDa) — Penetrating to the dermis, this molecule reaches the fibroblasts that produce the skin's own hyaluronic acid and stimulates their production. Low molecular weight HA also has documented anti-inflammatory properties in the dermis — relevant for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and any skin condition with an inflammatory component.
Supporting Ingredients
Panthenol (provitamin B5) at 2% — a humectant and emollient that works synergistically with hyaluronic acid to improve both the skin barrier function and the moisture-retaining capacity of the epidermis. Beta-glucan at 0.5% — a polysaccharide derived from oat or yeast that has documented wound-healing and barrier-repair properties, making it particularly valuable in a hydrating serum for compromised or sensitised skin. Glycerin at 5% provides an additional layer of humectant activity that bridges the high-molecular-weight surface hydration and the deeper penetrating effects of the lower molecular weight HA.
How to Use
Apply to damp skin — the most important application instruction for any hyaluronic acid product. HA is a humectant: it attracts moisture from its environment to the skin. Applied to dry skin in a dry environment, it can draw moisture from the deeper layers of the skin rather than from the atmosphere — potentially causing surface dehydration rather than hydration. Applied to damp skin (after toning or spritzing with water), the HA has an immediate moisture source to attract to the skin surface. Apply three to four drops, press gently into the skin, and follow immediately with a moisturiser that seals the hydration in place. Use morning and evening.
